Which size is right?

Chest freezers are sold by interior volume (cu ft). Size to your bulk-buy cycle and floor space:

Compact (5–9 cu ft)Overflow frozen storage for a small kitchen.
Mid (10–17 cu ft)The common back-of-house bulk freezer.
Large (20+ cu ft)Bulk buying / commissary volume.

Health-department & code relevance

A chest freezer holds product frozen; NSF/ANSI 7 covers the commercial cabinet. Inspectors want frozen product genuinely frozen and a thermometer visible. A glass-lid version doubles as a frozen merchandiser and must still hold temperature with the lid opening.

Common questions

Chest freezer vs upright reach-in freezer?

A chest freezer gives more usable frozen volume per dollar and per square foot, and holds temperature better during a power blip — but you dig for product. An upright reach-in is easier to organize and access. Many kitchens keep a chest for bulk and a reach-in for daily use.

Is a residential chest freezer OK for a restaurant?

For a health inspection you want an NSF-listed commercial unit. A residential freezer may be tolerated for some non-TCS storage in some jurisdictions, but commercial listing is the safe answer.
